Scream And Run Cat in the Hat: Patrol, Teleport & How to Survive
How the Cat in the Hat hunts in Scream And Run — patrol loop, teleports, flashlight detection and the laugh warning — with the sprint-and-slide counter that works.
The Cat in the Hat is the hunter of Scream And Run's School chapter — a hat-wearing cat that walks the dark building, chases any player it spots, and cannot be fought or killed. Its single most important property is that it is not random: it patrols the same fixed loop of rooms every lap, which makes its behavior learnable and its route exploitable. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
Who the Cat in the Hat Is
Every Escape round on the School map runs on the same premise: the lights are out, up to 50 players are trapped inside, and the Cat is the reason nobody can just walk out. It is the antagonist of the five-key loop — while you search backpacks for White, Yellow, Green, Pink and Red, it walks the halls looking for you. Only one monster in the game carries the official name "Thomas" (the Mines hunter); this one is officially the Cat in the Hat, after the Dr. Seuss character. Some players call a darker variant "Dark Thomas", but that nickname has no official or even well-sourced community origin — it does not appear in the game's own materials. Behavior: Not Random — That Is the Whole Game
Players who transcribed the Cat's behavior across many recordings keep returning to one line: "He is not random. That single fact is the whole game." Everything below follows from it. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Fixed loop patrol. The Cat walks a repeating circuit through the school's rooms, entering one after another. Timing your room entries around his position works precisely because the route never changes. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- He hears movement and sees your flashlight. Sprinting near him and waving a light beam both draw attention — search quietly and keep the flashlight (F) brief. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- He uses the crawl holes — and crawls on the floor himself. The hidey holes in the Classroom are not player shortcuts; he can come through them, which is why they rank below the clock as hiding spots. Footage repeatedly catches him dropping low and crawling across the floor — "He's a cat. Of course he can crawl" — an easy detail to miss the first time it happens to you. Roblox API · 2026-09-11 Seen in footage · 2026-09-11
- He teleports on top of players. This is the Cat's signature and his biggest difference from Thomas in the Mines: he can appear at your position with almost no warning. Live recordings say the same thing — "He's like gone and then he just spawns on top of me" — and new players get warned up front: "I heard it can teleport and sneak up behind you." Assume any close encounter can start instantly. Seen in footage · 2026-09-11
- He walks through walls. Line of sight blockers and thin geometry delay him; they do not stop him — players get killed straight through them ("he got wall banged"). Seen in footage · 2026-09-11
- He ambushes from doorways — and gets stuck behind them. Squads learn to treat doors as jump-scare spawn points ("he hides in doors"), though the AI is not flawless: footage shows him wedged behind a door while a player watches it happen. Seen in footage · 2026-09-11
- He is faster in a straight line but turns poorly. Corners are the player's friend. He can be outrun — but only with the movement combination below, not by raw sprinting. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
The Laugh Is the Only Warning
The Cat's laugh is the one audio cue that precedes danger, and the default music is loud enough to drown it out — players describe the music as detrimentally loud. Turn the music down and leave sound effects on: the laugh tells you when a hallway is about to be unsafe and when a hiding spot needs to be already occupied. Community report · 2026-09-11
How to Survive a Chase
These are the counterplay rules that appear consistently across recordings and community guides: Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Search behind him, not ahead of him. The room he just left is safe for the length of his loop; the room he is entering is where deaths happen. This is the closest thing the game has to an official strategy. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Sprint and slide are one combination, not two options. Shift into Shift plus C — the slide around a corner is the only reliable way to break his line of sight mid-chase. Practice until it is reflex in the controls guide. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Crouch is for hiding, not running. C (crouch-crawl) keeps you unseen before he spots you. Once the chase starts, crouching locks you to walking speed and usually ends the run. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Never run straight. The school map is a loop — a straight sprint eventually brings you back around to him. Turn early, chain rooms, and keep choosing your next target before you arrive at the current one. Community report · 2026-09-11
- Never stop in a hallway. The corridors between rooms are the most dangerous standing locations in the game; cross them, do not pause in them. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
In Hide and Seek, the Cat Is a Player
Everything above describes the Escape-mode AI Cat. Hide and Seek swaps in a human one, and footage pins down its rules: the monster is either randomly selected — "it randomly selects who is Cat in the Hat" — or paid for, with the mode's interface pricing the Cat at 125 Robux. Survivors must last from 12 a.m. to 6 a.m., and at round start everyone can see the Cat's outline, "so we know where he's at". The player-Cat also has active abilities, including an X-ray that exposes hiding players: "he has a couple of ability. One gives him X-ray. So he knows where I am." Proximity still announces itself — he plays his music when close, and players nickname the alert sound a fart — which is why Hide and Seek veterans favor movement over concealment: "If I know where he is, I can avoid him... It's not about hiding. It's about being mobile." Seen in footage · 2026-09-11
The Mines Has a Different Hunter
From September 3, 2026, the second chapter swaps the Cat for Thomas — a spider-legged version of the tank engine, far larger than a player, able to switch into train form, traveling the chapter's rails. He walks through walls like the Cat but never teleports, and his music is audible from much farther away. Community consensus is unambiguous: Thomas is easier to deal with — "way bigger, hear his music from way farther, and he doesn't teleport on top of you." The full chapter route is in the walkthrough. Common Mistakes
- Hiding in thin cover after being seen. Desks and partitions block a sprint, not his senses — get into real hiding spots like the classroom clock, ranked in the hiding spots hub.
- Sprinting without a destination. Noise plus no exit plan equals a cornered death; pick the next room before you cross the current one. Inferred · 2026-09-11
- Kiting him forever. The round only ends when five keys reach five locks — see the keys guide — so every second spent leading him in circles is time the sweep is not happening. Inferred · 2026-09-11
- Waiting at the exit early. With keys still missing, the door does nothing; go hunt the remaining colors instead. Inferred · 2026-09-11
