Scream And Run Beginner Guide: Four Lives, Five Keys, One Exit
Survive your first Scream And Run night — claim your fourth life for free, turn the music off to hear the Cat's laugh, search the eight backpack rooms, and deliver every key the moment you find it.
Scream And Run traps up to 50 players in a dark school while the Cat in the Hat hunts them, and escaping is a 6.6% event — but the first round goes much better when you know three things most new players miss: you can start the night with four lives instead of three, the Cat's laugh is the only warning you get, and keys only ever spawn inside backpacks. This guide walks through all of it step by step. Roblox API · 2026-09-11

Step Zero: Claim Your Fourth Life
Everyone spawns with three lives. A fourth is free: join the developer's Roblox group and like the game, and the game grants one extra life before you ever move. It takes under a minute and it is the single highest-value action a new player can take — recorded runs regularly end on the third death. Community report · 2026-09-11
Turn the Music Off. Right Now.
The Cat's laugh is the only warning you will ever get, and the default music is loud enough to bury it — players describe it as detrimentally loud. Open the settings and drop the music before your first round so footsteps and the laugh stay audible. Every tip later in this guide depends on your ears working. Community report · 2026-09-11
The Objective
The main Escape mode has one loop: spawn after dark, search the school for five colored keys — White, Yellow, Green, Pink and Red — and deliver each to its matching padlock on the exit door. Keys hide only inside backpacks, the exit never moves, and the rooms never move; only the keys re-roll each round. Two other modes, Hide And Seek and Free Roam, let you learn the building without the full hunt. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
Your First Round, Step by Step
- Spend your first round in Free Roam instead. Walk the school once with no monster pressure and find the exit door. Knowing where you are running to is worth more than any key tip. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Learn four controls before anything else. Shift sprints, C crouches and crawls, Shift plus C slides, F toggles the flashlight. The full list with usage rules is in the controls guide. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Search only the eight backpack rooms. Classroom, Cafeteria, Library, Gymnasium, Bathroom, Kitchen, Office, Auditorium. Keys never spawn elsewhere, so sweeping other rooms is just time spent in the open. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Read the backpack glow. Every backpack can be searched once per round by everyone, and an opened bag goes dark. A dark bag means skip it — including bags other players already opened before you arrived. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Deliver each key immediately. The losing pattern in recorded runs is finding a key and continuing to search; the players who die with keys die in the middle of the next sweep. Walk the key straight to its matching lock, and have someone watch the hallway — unlocking takes real time. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Search behind the Cat, not ahead of him. His patrol is a fixed loop through the rooms, so the room he just left is the safe one to sweep. That single habit is the closest thing this game has to a strategy. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- Never stop in a hallway. The corridor between rooms is the most dangerous place to stand still anywhere in the game — cross it, do not linger in it. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
- When all five locks are done, leave. Do not explore one more room on the way out; the final phase of a round is where careful players get greedy and careless players get caught. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
If the Chase Starts
The Cat is faster than you in a straight line but turns poorly, so the answer is never a footrace down a corridor — it is sprint into slide, breaking his line of sight around a corner, then changing direction. Crouching will not save you: it exists for staying hidden, and you cannot run while crouched. The full escape playbook is in the Cat in the Hat guide. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
The Three Rookie Mistakes
- Sprinting everywhere. Speed without a destination makes noise, attracts attention, and ends in a dead end. Move with the next room already chosen. Inferred · 2026-09-11
- Chasing the gold key. There is no gold key — the five colors are White, Yellow, Green, Pink and Red, and guides listing "gold" copied another game. The details are in the keys guide. Seen in footage · 2026-09-11
- Trusting locker tutorials. Lockers cannot be opened and cannot be hidden in — the "hide in a locker" trick and the "locker chest" are fabrications. Real hiding spots, including the classroom clock, are ranked in the hiding spots hub. Roblox API · 2026-09-11
When the School loop feels routine, the second chapter is waiting: the Mines walkthrough covers the pickaxe-to-dynamite chain and its own monster, Thomas — who, most players agree, is easier to handle than the Cat.
